I have a female guppy that I know is pregnant. I have a question about her as to why she is hiding? I have some plants floating in the tank she is in and she will get in them and sit there. Is she getting ready to give birth? My bf also said that he saw her chase the male off. Is it about time for her?

Sounds like it, my platy floated at the top with the plants too. Didn't realize she was giving birth until I found some fry a couple days later. The male really bothered her... so maybe she's pushing him away because she needs to concentrate ;]

Ok then great! I am going to isolate her so he doesn't eat them or bother her. Thanks!

Aw, hope they are ok! And thanks! I am going to isolate her tonight so she isn't stressed by the male and stuff.

it's guppies. When you have a male and a female in a reasonably planted tank there will be fry and if you feed mom and dad properly you can have 40% make it to adulthood without any issues.
When I still had guppies the main problem was getting people to take the excees guppies.

Yea. I already know of a non-chain store that will take them for store credit, so I think I got that part covered if I need to.

Well done! I know it's exciting at first but trust me, guppies are so easy you have to work hard at messing that up.
What you could do if you have a well stocked petshop is to get some fry food. If not just rub a few flakes to dust and feed that.

I am actually in the process of raising some vinegar eels. Guppies will eat those won't they?

With guppies if it wiggles and fits in the mouth it's dinner!

Ok then I'm set for them! I am a little worried. The female looks a little slimmer than she was. not sure if she had her babies or what, but she does look slimmer. I haven't spotted any babies yet though. If she did have them she probably ate them :(

:( Maybe she did not have them yet!? My Molly did that to be honest, she looked so big, and she seemed to hide and stuff like she was ready to give birth. I put her in a breeding net, but the next day she looked thinner and no fry. I think she ate them all.

Hmm, I am thinking maybe she is still pregnant because she still looks fat because she got fatter again.... maybe she just had a good bowel movement? LOL

LOL i hope she has them too. When she has them, some of them will be going in my community tank. How many do you think would make a good amount for the tank? It's a 20 long and I plan on putting a school of neons in it.

Update: The female still hasn't had her babies yet, but she is incredibly fat. The people that gave me them know how to tell when they are ready to have babies by a spot on the back side of her belly. She has one all right, and a rather large spot. The male is harassing her even more. I am wondering will she get smaller once she has her babies? Or will she stay fat? I'll have to get a pic of her to post up shortly.

I'd say in the next week or two she'll give birth.

Lots and lots :hmm3grin2orange:
If you have lots of plants and hidey holes they should be ok for the most part.I don't know what to say about the red spot though!

Thanks for the articles and help guys lol. I am wanting to let her birth naturally so I have lots of plants and hiding spaces for the fry and her. I have a part of the tank with Java Moss for hiding. I have tons of rocks and other plants as well. I am hoping she will give birth soon! I know the male is following her around like crazy. He keeps nudging her in that red spot so maybe she is almost due?

Lol.
Ok now back on topic, lol. My female still seems to be pregnant. Her belly is still really big and red on her birth canal. The male is chasing her around as usual. I can probably tell when she gives birth though because she'll probably slim down and the male will back off maybe because he didn't bother her this much until she got pregnant. They are still young. I got them when they were 'teenagers' from someone who bred them.

Naturally? How else would a fish give birth?
