Few days ago I was looking around my reef tank with a flashlight after lights out. I peeked into a small crevasse crack in the rock and was surprised when a long tentacle moved away from the light. I kept an eye out for it the next few days but could never get a good look at it as it was really deep in the rock and would disappear at the first sign of light. Well just now it came poking out of the rock. It's extended a good inch out of the rock to the sand bed, and I would estimate the length to be at least 4". Been looking through id pages and can't find anything that fits. It is a dull creamy tan base color with darker brown strips on it. It also has a sort of mouth with tiny bristles on the end that it uses to grab some sand and munch on. The only thing I can find that looks like it is that it looks like the tentacle of a harlequin starfish in color. Could it be possible a tiny one got stuck in the rock or it just likes to hang out in there? [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

Sounds like a peanut worm. I just found one a week or so ago in my tank and that's what I figured it was. I can't find the link right now to a good worm ID page I found. I'll post it when I get a chance.

EDIT: I found the link ([Only Registered Users Can See Links.]). I believe it's a Sipunculida worm. Down the page a bit.

That would be exactly what it is. I looked at an example of a peanut worm earlier but there wasn't a very good picture. Thanks for the id!

Great little creature to have in the tank. They are excellent detritivores.
