Can you have painted turtles as pets? And if so, does anyone know where you can buy them? I think they are really neat looking and was thinking about getting one.

i have a couple that i was given from the wild when they were babies but idk if you can buy them anywhere, i prefer them over sliders cause they dont get quite as big, and their not as "aggressive" i find....mine eat right outta my hands! :)

Aww I bet that's adorable!!! I just thought, maybe I could check the local herp society and see if they have any that I could get. I know they have all kinds of stuff there. And how many do you think would be a good number to keep them together? Or are they solitary? Or do they just don't care either way?? LOL sorry all the questions.

They are fine together so if you have the tank size for it you can have a few. Unless they are illegal in your locality (state, county, town, etc.) they are legal. You can buy babies and adults online. You could also check locally for any that need saving such as local herp rescues and even local pounds can get them every once in a while. The problem with aquatic turtles that most people don't realize is the cost. They basically take every thing from fish and reptiles put together and require a lot of cleaning. If you are okay with that, great.

I know how messy they are. I used to have one. He was a box turtle and I found him in the back yard. He had only 3 feet. One of them was a nub. I fed him worms out of my yard and I kept him in my bathtub. I would keep him for a little while and then I let him go. Every now and then he would come back to our house and I would catch him and keep him for a day then let him go. It's like he was stopping in to say hi. His name was Squirtle. He was a young one at that.

well i keep all mine together, they like to pile up on top of each other tryin to bask :P you'll need at least an inch of water per inch of shell(i prefer more) and i know in most states if not all its illegal to sell turtles under 4" which is def when their at their cutest! but anyway you'll def have to get a good filter(they do sell turtle filters) i dont even bother with anything other than gravel and heavy rocks and such in their tank cause they will just destroy it, you'll need a basking spot where they can get out of the water and most importantly a uvb bulb to maintain proper shell growth, this is prob the most expensive part... otherwise it will essentially rot off...in addition to turtle food they do enjoy worms and crickets as occasional supplements....just do alot of research, they are very interesting pets! if you do decide to get one you'll def enjoy him/her!

Omg that pic of them on top of each other is too cute!! Yea like I said I had a box turtle before and he was a hoot. I am thinking about getting a 110 gallon tank because I found a really good deal on one for $80. I just may get into turtles!!!
