I have a 20g long tank with a few plants, driftwood, and a VERY small lamp. Brichardi cichlid. I have rocks available, and all the cool pictures of stacked rocks on google look cool. How to you prevent waste from building up between rocks?? I would probably have most of the tank with rock.
Also, filtration is a hydor prime canister filter.:4:

remove the rocks, clean them, put them back in all done while conducting water change/maintenance

Good flow in the tank usually keeps it fine with low waste guys like brichardis.

Should you wash them off in the same water that you are taking out of your tank?

Doesn't matter. You use tank water to rinse biological media to preserve nitrifying bacteria, the rocks won't have any siginificant amount of that. If the Brichardi are fed pellets that do not fall apart there should not be enough debris to warrant removing all the rockwork (and ruining their territories/comfort zones).

it would be better out the same water but yeah it didn't really matter.

I'm thinking about setting up a rock formation in my 55g tank. I like the natural look of them. my grandpa farms and they have alot of rocks there that they pulled from the field.

just make sure you test them first to make sure they're aquarium safe!

How do you test them?
