Hi, I have a 46 gallon tank cycling right now, and I'm wondering what to put in it. So far, I'm planning on an african butterflyfish, and a black ghost knifefish. I know the knife gets really big, and once it gets too big, my friend has agreed to take it. I was wondering what other unique fish I could put in there with them. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How about an elephant Nose ( Gnathonemus petersi) not very colourful but catches attention with body shape much as the Knife fish does but won`t outgrow your tank, also tend to be nocturnal.

the knifefish will get way too big for a 46g tank. I woulnt get it unless you have abigger tank to move it to once it grows.

I'm not sure of the size they get but you should look into a baby whale. They look like an elephant nose -the nose. a pretty interesting fish

He already said he had someone who would take it once it got too big ;)

If you have a tight-fitting cover a ropefish would mix well with African butterfly fish. Actually a better choice than any of the knife fishes. Incidentally, butterfly fish are schoolers, best kept in groups. They also prefer quiet water (not much current) and some floating plants for cover.

That's odd, I read in most places that they will kill each other if you keep more than one. A ropefish sounds pretty cool, and I'll look into baby whales.

Butterfly fish kill each other? They're found in huge schools (hundreds-thousands) in the wild. I had a pair many years ago, never any problems between them.

Knifefish needs 300+ fully grown...
Butterflyfish is a good choice...
