SO i have kept my betta in a 1 gallon tank for the past 3 months, and i have been feeling terrible about it. Despite my frequent water changes, i still felt like i had this poor guy trapped. SO today, i finally made my conscience clear. I have added him to his own 3 gallon tank on my desk, and he is swimming around exploring now. I feel so much better about this whole set up. THe tank is spacious and he has his own space to actually stretch his fins out.
