I bought a Eheim Pro II 2026 for my 50 gallon tank almost 5-1/2 years ago. The filter is barely performing now. It only circulates half the surface water at this point. I've done periodic cleaning but have never replaced the filter media (W/ the exception of the pads. Those I've replaced as needed.). Is it time to replace this filter w/ a new one or are there parts that I could replace that would bring it back to life? For the past several years, all I've had in the tank are 2 very large Tin Foil Barbs. They do great but I also have an algae problem. I'm thinking the filter may be to blame for this. If I'm mistaken, PLEASE, enlighten me. Thanks for the help!

ive never used eheims, but i know people who have had fluvals for 15 years, ive had some of my fluvals for quite a few years too, that might be the lifespan of eheims

Thanks. There's got to be some parts that need attention then. A bit more info.....I had a really hard time priming the filter recently. I've NEVER been able to clean the hoses properly (including the spray bar). How long is the filter media suppose to last anyway? What can I do to bring this filter back to it's former (like new) glory?

media lasts a long time, probably forever. try cleaning the impeller or replacing it and see if that helps

Thanks, again. I was thinking about doing this on my own. Didn't want to waste the $$ though if it wasn't going to help w/ my problem. I think I cleaned it for the first time recently. It felt kinda rough. Well, it's not as smooth as you would expect it to be anyway. They don't cost too much. I guess I'll start there....Anyone else (w/ a Eheim) want to chime in here?

I`ve used my ehiem Filter since 1980 and it is still going fine, your flow problem is probably caused by the Impeller being clogged.
Your Filter Media should we okay for 12 months as a Biological Filter unless you have a really messy tank to clean up because of high waste producing fish.

Eheim and Fluval are VERY long lasting filters. Sounds like you are clogged up somewhere. I'd disassemble the entire thing and clean thoroughly then reassemble. Have you cleaned your tubes out, too?

EDIT: Whoops, you did say you cleaned out the hoses.

I guess I should do that (take it apart). It's always been an intimidating chore. When the gasket started leaking, I went into fits trying to stop it (before I ordered a new gasket). I'm afraid I'll get it apart and not put everything back properly or take something apart that shouldn't have been messed with. Any more advice? BTW, what does the impeller look like when it's clogged? What are the visual signs?

Gunk buildup, that's the technical term for it. :c3:

Seriously though, not hard to disassemble and reassemble. Online you can find exploded views of the filter to make it easy.

Have you ever checked the impeller? That could be getting worn. I have a a 2017 that still works. Eheim hasn't made the 2017 since 1983, that should give you an idea of the longevity of them.
