10 gal tank. no real plants. bought a air pump designed for a 30 gal tank by mistake am i doing harm or good was planning on setting up a 3 or 4 airstones along the back of tank.

No harm at all.... as long as you don't intend to grow plants, some plants need the co2 and too much oxygen will stunt growth. As for the fish, O2 is good for the water and the fish

wow thanks for the quick reply I knew too much oxygen was bad for planted aquariums but wasn't sure about regular tanks. thanks

Typically for air pumps the rating is for overcoming the depth of the water (head pressure). As mentioned, things will be just fine.

you could even get a y joint and put in two stones.
