bulbs that dont grow.. help?

I bought some petsmart bulbs and 3 grew out of two pakages, I have 100 watt floresent lighting and sand in a 10 gal.. I moved them to my 20 and there doing great, the others either didnt grow or just grew some white web like fungus looking stuff on it.. im not experienced with plants so can anyone help?? Also some growing and treatment tips would help. Thanks AC

I think the white stuff is moulds... Is the lighting really 100 watts? That's too much... And what is the Degrees Kelvin rating for the light??? Does it look more blue or more gold?

what should the lighting be at? its like a white webb and it slippery. what are you asking about?

About the light... The kelvin should be about 6000K and above.anything below wouldn't really make your plants grow . The lighting really depends on what type of plants you're keeping... My 10g tank is 4.6wpg..

That's just about average. Only a small percentage of bulbs ever make it. Trash the white ones. They've rotted.

PS........bulbs get planted with only about the bottom 1/3 in the substrate. Hard to keep them in there at times, too.

Yea im thinking of just buying the 10 dollar ready grown plants. Is there anything I need to know about keeping them in my 20? Its about 76 in temp all the time in there and no salt added. I already have some growing in there but I wana keep them alive. can you give me some tips?

Those 'mystery bulbs' are Aponogeton species, usually hybrids, though some can be water lilies. If any of the bulbs are rounded, they are lilies.
The bulbs should lay on the substrate until they sprout. They will naturally pull themselves into the substrate with their roots, but you can plant them, as Lady Hobbs advised, if they start growing in a spot you don't want them to.

Yep, they are good if you don't have a plant substrate such as flourite...

I got one of those mixed Aponogeton/Lily bags at petco. I don't have lights on my betta tank but about a third of them grew with regular room lights. They are so full and healthy now, so they must have very low requirments as far as lighting and care goes. I did have to throw away several ones with mold on them. I don't know if that helps or not.

To keep your plants healthy, you will need appropriate lighting about 10-12 hours per day and nutrients.

Have you any fish with these plants?
Are you just using plain old sand? If you are you may want to get some good quality plant food to apply directly to the substrate.

I use fish waste and Seachem Flourish currently and am getting great results.

I forgot to mention I also have a high iron substrate.
