Recently i began to mull around the idea of having a piranha or a red bellied pacus tank. The biggest tank i have right now is a 29 gallon, and i was thinking about moving the couple fish i have in there to my now empty 10 gallon and using the 29 for the piranhas or pacus. Is this tank big enough? Is there anything special i need to know about taking care of thes fish? If i can not support the lifestyle of these particular species, Is there any other similar fish that anyone might know of that would be suitable? Thanks for the responses.

Piranhas are schooling and get get big (about a foot) so you need a big tank to deal with a school of one foot fish. Pacus get much bigger and shold not even be available in my opinion, I have seen them at about 30". Closest thign acceptable is a silver dollar. Depending on species you are looking at a 55 minimum for a school of these guys, most species need even larger.

I can do pretty much anything. ever heard of Breaking Benjamin? I play alot of their stuff. I also play the djembe, and african hand drum. They are really fun, you should look into it.

Oh yea, and about the fish tank thing, i was also thinking about putting maybe 2 oscars in it, but i am worried about hole-in-head disease. Is there anyway to fend hole in head disease off?

yeah. i play hand percussion too. i have a djembe, a darbuka, a log drum, tablas, and lots of other percussion i've been collecting for a long time. my brother is the "percussionist" in my band. every year my brother and i buy each other percussion and drums for our birthdays'. it's a tradition. a couple times a year on his farm we have a festival we hold called "kimstock" named after his gilrfriend's sister. a whole bunch of bands play, including ours and we have 100 or more person drum circles around a big bonfire. i love it.:thumb: that's very cool that you play drums too. keep rockin out and happy new year! --jeff

2 oscars would need at least 75 gallons.

jeffs99dime
01-01-2007, 04:11 PM
sounds pretty nice. for trashy sounds you ever look at the factory metal line. myself, i've never used them. just wondering. i love my chinas by the way. on a few of my chinas, i drilled them out to alter the sound. the 12 dollar china- let me guess, wuhan right?

One oscar needs 55 bare minimum, 75 would still be much better and what most hold as minimum for even one.

Yup, its a wuhan. I do a percussion camp at one of the local collages here, "rhythm on the plains" and we got one of the local music stores to sponsor us so we got to play around with a bunch of the factory metal items. I love the little celtic cross with the tambourine chimes on it.

sounds good. i think i will!
the points are for purchasing things in the store. scroll up to the top of the page and click on shop menu, then on shop main. there you will find all of the things/ features you can purchase. one thing though, every item you buy costs the price specified and there is also a tax on it that isn't specified. so, something that costs 1000 points is going to actually cost like 1200 points.

sure sounds like it. And back to the drums. What size is your djembe, i have and 18" goat skin head, rope tuned mahogony. It was carved by a native in mali africa. he carved african alligators into it. its pretty sweet. the bass rattles the dishes in the kitchen, and the slap will cut throught the loudest drum circles ever. i love it.

jeffs99dime

16 inch. very cutting highs. mid okay and the bass response is awesome- real clean. i like it a lot. yours sounds very nice by the way.

Im actually in the process of making my own djembe, a 14 inch solid oak, i carved a rattle snake wrapping itself around the base, and bareing its fangs near the mid-joint. its in the drying out process right now, in another week i will be able to string it up and try it out.

you own a lathe? that's pretty cool.

Drumachine09
01-01-2007, 05:03 PM
nope, no lathe (i wish) I use a chainsaw, a machete, and some elbow grease to get it shaped, and then i go in with my carving tools to put the snake in. its coming out quite nice for my first attempt.

jeffs99dime
01-01-2007, 05:05 PM
that's better than a lathe anyway! you're actually making it with your own hands. it'll be a lot more satisfying too!

Drumachine09
01-01-2007, 05:08 PM
yeah, plus, how often do you get to go to town on a log with a chainsaw?:ezpi_wink1:

jeffs99dime

. . heyy guyss..about the pirahna or pacu idea. . .pacus shouldnt be sold period! reason being is altho they are very interesting to watch and own , yet they get soo big that they will take up all the space in your tank and for them to be normal happy healthy fish , they should be taken cared of in terms of space , ideally 300 gallons or more would be needed and even then the demensions have to be right for them to turn around as they can get 3 feet and thick , as far as pirahnas go i started out with those fishes at the beggining...very intelligent methodical predatory fish , unless trained to eat krill or silversides and a host of nonlive foods they can be very hard to untrain and they may not accept other types of foods , anytime you feed live foods you run the risk or introducing dieases , also it can be very unpleasent after a while to watch the pirahna tear apart fishes that most people keep as pets in their tanks , not to mention they are illegal to own in many states! , right now i have three pacus in my tank.... i hate to do it but i will have to find them homes sooner then later as the bigger they get the harder it is to find them homes , the ones i have right now are 5-6inches.....its such a shame too since they are sooo fasinating to watch move around and go about their bussiness , they are funny smart fishes and they almost seem to smile with their facial expression....but unless you have that space....its not even worth it to get attached to them then to have to give them up later .. . .now you can continue the drumm talk. . . lol

You say that like the drum talk ever stops!:ezpi_wink1:

Good luck!
