There are clams in the hobby (notably Tridacna gigas) which get large.

An LFS in my area has had a t.gigas in their display tank for about 8yrs and it's now 18-22"; I think the going price for it is $600 (there used to be two but someone bought the other). Very pretty. In the wild they (giant clams) can exceed 3ft and even 4ft in diameter and weigh hundreds of pounds.

Interesting article. I wonder what the early humans used to catch those clams, or if they just dove down and felt around for one them, one at a time. I bet the early humans also some many good uses for the un-discarded shells. Is the AC news section submitted to search engines? It would be a great source of traffic-that could be lured into joining AC:hmm3grin2orange:
After seeing that pic, I'm gonna have to look at second hand stores for a tridacnid shell if they're not illeagil(are they?). It's ( :P ) to know that there is a way to get those dead ocean creature souveniers without at all supporting the uncontrolled buisnesses.

Yes the news section is submitted into search engines. Members who like the articles and want to help give them some extra exposure can stumble, digg them or tag them on del.icio.us.

Hopefully AC news will become a part of google news before the end of september.

I think you can find such clam shells legally but don´t know your local rules.
