im going to be gettin a EBJD on tuesday, and im super excited about it!:19: but ive been finding alot of info on the net saying how they keep dying on people even though their parameters and such are perfectly fine, they just stop eating, hide, lose color and die...perhaps a recesive gene defect? prone to infections/parasites? has anyone here had problems keeping EBJDs? or on a better note, been sucessful in keeping them?
My LFS has a pair in one of their show tanks that have been there for almost 3 years with no troubles what-so-ever and have even produced fry for them to sell (normally colored JD's though). They are a beautiful fish. Good Luck with your new friend.:19:

thanx for the imput! i never thought i would have any probs but then i was reading all these peoples stories how they all died the same way in the same time frame...maybe they were somehow all from the same bad breeder...im not sure if i wanna try breeding any yet though for now ill stick with one, specially since ya dont know what your gettin with the fry...i had a regular JD a while back and he was the most interesting fish with lots of personality! i cant wait to get my new fishy friend:hmm3grin2orange:

the member nautilus here had bad luck with them and they kept dying, not sure if its the same case as rams where theyre packed iwth horomones and stuff. regular JD can take alot of punishment, so im curious if its horomones
i cant wait to get my new fishy friend
Are you getting a juv or an adult? I remember that one of the batchs of fry from the two EBJD at the LFS looked like they were going to be like their parents but as they grew they're blueish color faded and they turned out to be regular JD's. 90% of them had extremely vibrant coloration though. Either way they turn out beautiful.thumbs2:

the second post here says theres a EBJD pair that produces Regular JD this is not true because if EBJD do breed together they have 100% super weak EBJD... i keep 4 EBJD right now and Ive had no problems im currently breeding them as well a long process that im dedicated to, you mentioned they were juveniles, which is going to be harder for you but with there prices i dont blame ya.. make sure nothing is aggressive in the tank the stress will kill it, make sure you clean the tank weekly, make sure you feed high protein foods

thanx for the info nano ill keep this updated..do you have any pics of yours? right now i just plan on it being him/her and a pleco..i thought about a pair but i dont want any fights goin on if they hate each other..do you have any tankmate suggestions for them? or would it be better by itself? when i had my old JD it was just him and the pleco, and the occasional feeder guppy but of course they didnt last long:18:

tanks mates....... anything un-aggressive really they don't get aggressive most are male so your chances of a pair are slim and even if you did find a pair its useless to breed them because the fry are so weak and un-valuable..... i do have photos here these are mine

I have has an EBJD for about 6 months now, I'm in the process of raising him from a juvenile to and adult.
When I got him he was about 2 inches in length, since that time he has about doubled in length. Over the months I have kept him with a varitey of fish: two plecos, 6 australian rainbow fish (the ugly ones), a few dwarf rainbow fish, and a female jack dempsey of a significantly smaller size(mine is male).
In the process of replacing the ugly rainbow fish for the pretty rainbow fish I noticed some really odd behavior with my EBJD, after I had nobody in the tank except for the plecos, he wouldn't eat always hid and would not greet me when I went to his tank like normal. As soon as I added more "dither" fish again his behavior went back to normal. I have read alot of posts about people EBJD's dying on them as well, usualy the owner had them in solitary confinement or with a pleco. I would definitly recomend some top swimmers for the little guy.

No doubt about it, that fish is gorgeous. How big do they get?
the size of a normal jack..

I heard when they are full-grown, they tend to be more shy and they get really scared at stuff and like won't eat... Is that true?
they get shy but i had one about 6-7 and then soldit to my lfs for money and its still thereabout 9 inchs and eating fine? does anybody have info?

remember EBJD grow twice as slow as Regular Jacks
Are you sure about that?
I have research lots of diffent thing on the EBJD's
and its all sorts of mixed up, the most recent stuff I have read has stsed alot of the things people tell one another if incorrect.
Like EBJD's staying smaller and weaker then normal jack's.
I guess there was somesort of DNA sampeling done and according to the test results. there was NO genetic diffrence between an EBJD and a normal jack.
Alot of the old myths have seemed to be disproven like breeding two EBJD's together and such (its been done with 100% EBJD fry).
Do some digging you'll find it.

there is not genetic difference between a JD and a EBJD from personal experience and what a lot of others will tell you Jack Dempseys grow faster almost twice as fast as the Electric blue genotype. its not sure why this happens but something to do with cross breeding.

I think cross breeding is a term that you are using incorrectly, if an EBJD was a cross bred fish there would be a genitic difference. A cross breed is a species of fish is bred with another speciecs of fish to produce a fish with traits of both.
Did you mean inter-breeding?

im sorry its called in-breeding. but the fact that people don't understand if you line breed (using a child as a mate) your next generation of fry are going to unusually weak. this is why EBJD now grow slower then normal Jack Dempsey. theres not a lot of information as where the first pair came from, but i found a large article about that topic on All Things Dempsey i believe.
