On some other forums I used, they had a map where forum members could put a "pin" on where they lived, it really helped members to know who lived nearby!

I think something like that could be cool here, so you could easily find a fellow hobbyist that lives next door!

Having a member mapp has been discussed before but a poll showed that the mayority of our members was against such a function. Atleast at that time.

Just getting everyone to fill out there profile correctly would help. I spot people here from my state and it's interesting to PM them and say hello and ask where they live and what's available for LFS in their area.

I think that type of map would cause conflict, especially when you don't really know a whole lot about the people on here. Basically anyone has access to the things on this site, whether they sign up or not. For the younger members on here, that map wouldn't be such a good idea. Not saying it would be a very good idea for anyone in general, but more so my concern would be for our younger members. Maybe a more general state/country map would be more acceptable, but that also poses a problem, being that we're not all from the US or just one single country.

The opion regarding member maps seems to have remained the same since the last time this was discussed.

I think if you made it where you can choose to have it on there or not it would be diff.

I've seen it before and like the idea. I don't see the issue if people could choose whether or not to pin themselves on a map. It could be completely voluntary. It's the same thing as someone putting their location in their profile like Lady Hobbs said, but more interactive. You don't have to pin yourself on your house with your address and Google Street View...:hmm3grin2orange:

i agree with TRDNiteLife..if someone doesnt want to pin themselves they dont have to, even if you pin exactly where your are, unless you write an actual address, or house description no one knows where your house really is anyway.. i see no problem with it...

besides people give out there exact address to craigslist people all the time, and you never know what kind of people and scammers are on there..

My forum has a member map, and it automatically puts a pin when people sign up. But it's not entirely accurate, firstly because it goes by suburb or town, not the exact address, and secondly we've set it to not put pins on top of each other, so if 2 people sign up in the same area, the pins will appear in different places. The default view is of Australia, but you can drag to other countries as well.

No members so far have expressed any reluctance to be added to the map, and we've had no issues with it.

The previous forum I was on had one, and like others said, it is optional. Actually, the people on the forum wanted everyone to put themselves on the map so they could find who is close so they could do trades and such. It never conjured up a conflict there and those people were rather rude as well.

I think it could be interesting, if it were optional to pin on.

I think it would be pretty cool to see who all is near me. If it was on a voluntary basis that would be best. I'm not sure why there is so much concern for people knowing where otherse live but to each their own. My vote is for it though.

Could be interesting to see where everyone is. Then again its all up the individual if they want to or not.

yea, I would like to have it just for purposes of knowing who is around me for trading and what not. It would be optional to submit your location.

i agree would be useful, as long as its voluntary

I will think about adding a voluntary one where members can enter themselves. I will never install one that autolist members.

I agree one that forces you to be mapped is out of the question.

Mine does it automatically. No one has protested or cared at all.

And like I said it doesn't show an exact location, suburb only.

I agree that there are some drawbacks, but I think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. I'm for it.

I personally think it would be a good idea as well.

the "Pin" is an option that you can do or choose not to do. It is also very general when you are doing it on the World Map. The most specific information you would see would be what most people put in there location on their profile anyway. I don't thin personal security would be anywhere NEAR a problem caused by this.
