java moss growth

My java moss in my 55 and 29 look like a bad afro, it is spreading out and looks great and the cory's and bettas like hiding in it, question is how can I take a part of it and attach it to the drift wood I have? Also if I get a small piece as big as a large marble and put into some declorinated water with a lamp over it will it grow, just curious might be nice to grow some outside of the fish tank and attach it when it gets big. Also thought about getting some of those craft sheets from walmart and tying some to it and growing a patch of it to put on the bottom of the tank would this work?

Yes to all of the above....

To spread Java Moss just cut off a small protion attach it to what you want and leave it alone....

Yes. When the java moss grows out of the water, though, it will be very important to keep it wet. It cannot retain humidity as well as most other amphibious plants...

I think i'm doing mine wrong as well.

When it grows it seems to get super dirty and might even be dying but all the while it only grows away from what it's attached to...never along/spreading.
