I'm thinking no more than 2 with a tank your size, but I'd wait until some discus folks chime in on that.

That's 34 gallons? I would go with another fish.

Yikes! That's 26 gallons!!!!!! That's even worse. Stick with a bunch of tetra's.

They grow...quite quickly.....:hmm3grin2orange: so if you don;t intend getting something much bigger....well....stunted fish are not my general cuppa tea...*s*....

Daily water change is advisable for keeping discus especially in a crowded community tank. The general thumb of rule is 10 gallon per discus. A typical 2ft tank can accomodate 3 adult discus(4" - 7") or 6 juvenile discus (2"- 3"). It is proven that with multiple feeding and regular water change your fishes will grow better.

The only time I would have discus in such a small tank is with a very advanced breeder and only a mated pair. Other than that they need a bigger tank. It is simply extremely difficult to keep the water quality up and be able to catch problems in time to fix them for non-experts with such a small tank. Bigger is much better.

I think two would be fine. I have 9 cichlids in a 29 gal for now...lol, no problems. Just dont crowd them in with a lot of other fish.

C'mon guys...we are talking about living animals here - no discus in a 26G whether they grow fast , slow etc... they are group animals and need lot's of room. You are setting them up for a miserable life otherwise.

9 cichlids in a 29G is also not really ideal! Actually pretty insane... it may be going alright just now as the aggression can be evenly spread but can't be much fun to watch them bicker all day and try to create territory's in that size a tank.

I agree. I you cannot afford to get them a tank they need, then don't keep them. Simple as that.

I'd say a minimum of 300 litres for discus, and if you wanna keep a proper school until they are all full grown, around 700 litres. They also need room to move, remember.

i agree with the 75g min. 55g is possible for 4, but a 75g gives 6" more width and you can easily have 6 discus with 10 cardinal tetras
