My new discus

I bought a new discus today that was all alone and i had the money and spare tank so i bought him/her i plan to buy her a friend from another fish shop tomoz but was curious how would the best tank set up be for discus the BEST set up ie plants, substrate caves etc thanx in advance

My discus tank has a whole case of Malaysian driftwood form Feller stone. They also like sheltered areas of broadleafed plants like swordplants.

They like a lower pH and softer water which is very important to them, lots of plants for hiding, etc. I love discus. They are soooo pretty.

I was surprised when I started reading about this fish. I thought I could get a bunch of different colors but learned you should try to stay pretty much with the same colors as they will breed with any of the colors in the tank and you will get off strains which aren't valuable to the fish stores.

It would hardly matter unless you were a breeder and wishing to sell the young.

i know one thing about there environment for a tank and that is to have a nice open area in the middle of a shaded area this way the center of attention is drawn to the open area of the tank. how big is the tank i think they look good with at least three.

congrads i'll probably get some when i get a spare tank.

i was quite upset today when i went to the shop they had none in at either of my lfs so my main shop i know the owner personally said he will order some in for me next week :)

In nature they are found in clear deep pools, dashing in and out of fallen trees, driftwood at home... Heres my set up for three Juvies 2-3in...

I woudln't recommend salt for any freshwater setup that doesn't need it naturally (rift lake cichlids, mollies, etc.).

The pools they are from are actually far from clear, closer to tea. They are quite discolored by tannins being brought in by the rain as it washes across the ground to the water. That is why low light as well as hiding places out of the direct light are vital for their comfort. In addition they aren't near the surface, so the light reaching them is even less intense. They prefer vertical root structues that they can slip through while still vertical.

Umm yeah in chatterbox, i posted some pic when the tank was pretty bare, i added some more plants, cory cats, upside down catfish and a second discus ill take some pics and post them here later on today ;)

I saw a Discus fish in the fish store once that I wanted really bad!! My husband told me it's not exactly a beginner fish because it requires a lot of work! Good luck with your Discus fish!

I've found them to not be much maintanence at all, I'm in year 11 this year and i still dont think they will be a hassle with all my study and mine are perfectly healthy
