I used this stuff because it came with the filter, but after reading what it contains, I'm now on the fence. Any comments ?

For those that use it, how often do you replace it ?

Bio-Chem Zorb is a blend of 2 research-grade scavenger resins, 2 pharmaceutical-grade ion-exchange resins and high porosity activated carbon conveniently ready for use in the RENA FilStar Filters. Bio-Chem Zorb removes organic waste, toxic gases, water discoloration, foul odors and phenols in both fresh and saltwater, and toxic heavy metals in freshwater. Bio-Chem Zorb will not release phosphates.

I used the first bag that came with it 2 years ago.I have long since switched to all mechanical/biological filtration. At the time I was using it I had high phosphates and it did nothing to reduce them.

When I got my xp2 the zorb seemed to fancy for me to trust it. I tossed it and replaced it with other biomedia.

It very likely has the same effect as carbon.

Yeah, it sounded like 'enhanced carbon'. But Rena also sells a carbon-only insert, so I wasn't sure.

it's probably just an acid washed carbon, which are not supposed to leech phosphates. The more acid washed the carbon is the less it leeches, or so i've read. The regular carbon insert is most likely a lower grade activated carbon.

I use it and never had a problem.

But could just be luck.

I used the first one that came with the filter. Now all of my xps are running with some coarse sponges on the bottom, middle loaded with ceramic rings, and the top is a polishing sponge.
