Platies

Tonite I got two golden colored Platies from Wallyworld. I usually shy away from that place but tonite was different. The associate seemed to be a nice guy but didn't know anything about fish. I wanted one male and one female. So looking on the internet i can't find a picture of a male or female to look at. Oh I can find plenty of Platy pictures but they never say what sex they are. Can someone point me to a picture of a male and female online?? LOL

Guppies are suppose to be easy to raise but i kill them. Thought maybe I'd try some platies and see what happens. See my previous post called"Guppy Killer".

Platy's are good newbiefish, I only managed to kill a couple of them (even though nearly all the other fish in the aquarium died at one point or another). After a year or so, by the time you have some good experience and when the two have turned into 10, then start giving them away and get back down to one (not two) and get some other fish. We have one left of our original bunch, others having gone to (hopefully) happy homes.

But please do read up on starting the tank- its more involved than just filling the tank w/ water and adding fish.

If you were able to distinguish a male guppy from a female guppy, then you can do the same with platies.

Hello there,

It is very easy to sex them looking at the anal fin. In the males it is more "rod" like while in the females it is more like "fan" shaped. The follosing pictures might help you. The first one shows a male. In the second picture, the bottom one is a female. I hope it helps.

Male Guppies have the pretty tails and are the most colorful, easy to tell male and female. The Platies to me look almost the same. I was showed the difference between the Platies, only too me they look the same. I sorta have it figured out. The two Platies I got yesterday are both males, I got them a female tonite. haha
