Bought 2 Dalmatian Mollies 3-4 days ago...This morning I saw 1 little fry behind a plant. I rescued it, and before I knew it I had 13 adorable babies.:41: Not sure if there are more, but it's nice to see that a good number survived. They are all sorts of colors, I'll do my best to get some quality pictures soon.
well done ,its always nice to buy sum fish and get a free fry!!:hmm3grin2orange:

If your tank is well planted (either fake or real), fry are usually very good at staying alive. Congrats.

I feel like the worst person in the world right now. I should have left them in that tank. I was so excited to have fry and watch them grow... now they're all laying at the bottom of the "rescue" tank dead. I think it was from shock, I heard they are very sensitive when it comes to moving them to a another container.:scry: :scry: :scry: I really regret taking them out. Now I won't get to see them grow up. :smad:

I was so worried that they'd all get eaten by the others I took them all out without thinking it through. I also was concerned about them being able to eat in a tank with the adults, but next time I'm going to try my best to get them their food while still in the same tank. I really hope I have another chance to raise some fry :[ I don't know why this is hurting me so much.

Mhmm, I definitely did become attached...very quickly. I knew some wouldn't survive so I was prepared for that, but I didn't expect all of them to go:ssad: I will get the breeding net, hopefully I'll have better luck with that. Thank you!

Hey don't feel bad we all learn the hard way...
I have over 80 Molley fry right now and I lost my first 2 batches to the same thing.
So if you have a male and a female you will have more.. If you have a heavily planted either real or fake you will have fry that will make it. they are only in danger for the first few days from the parents after that it is smooth sailing. I have 15 fry in the main tank I couldn't catch with 5 very large molleys and they are fine. They even come to the surface to eat now. Just grind some of the food really small and they will get enough don't worry.

Congratulations on so much fry! All of that is good to hear, it makes me feel better. I just felt like a murderer :[ Now I gained more knowledge, and I hope the next batch will be a success. You've cleared up the feeding technique for me, I was much too worried that they wouldn't be able to get any food.. I do have 1 male and 1 female. Since she just gave birth, how long could it be until the next fry? Also, the male's gonopodium was making odd movements towards the female earlier...is this him trying to fertilize her? I really appreciate all the advice. :ssmile:

Yep they are trying to mate so in a month and half or so you will have more.

Molly fry are actually very big as far as fry is concerned, and are usually fine with adult mollies or in a community tank, as long as you don't have any big or very aggressive fish in there.
Fry should mostly be left alone for the first few weeks, as they are rather fragile when it comes to being moved.

They were a good size. I actually have 3 rummy nose, and 3 platies in the tank. Saw a Rummy nose eat a fry :[ I do believe the next time I have some they will be able to survive though with the amount of plants. Lesson learned :[ I just hope I'll have another chance to raise them.

Oh you will have a chance to get more fry that is a given, and if you really want to make sure they are not eaten you can move them right away as long as it is into a pre-cycled and aged tank I do it all the time with no losses.
I usually take a container add 1/2 water from the main tank 1/2 water from the fry tank net the little buggers place them in the container and let sit for 15 minutes which is usually how long if not longer it takes to wrangle them all up. Then just as yo think you have them all 3 more will pop out of the weeds, from behind the filter, and other places. Then I just pour the whole works in the fry tank and feed 30 minutes later.

I do the same as SOunguru...I have a dedicated frye tank..but I usually put heavily pregnant moms to be in there and let them get into the birthing thing..although I also have a heck of a lot of frye in the large tank..those that I do rescue I put into a pitcher of water (taken from said tank)...and pop the frye into it...then I add some of the frye tank's water..and then eventually pour the whole shebang into the frye tank..I don't have any casualties..

Unfortunately, I don't have another large enough tank to hold all the babies... in the near future I'd like to invest in a 30 gl fry tank. I suppose for right now, when they have babies again...I'll just let natural selection do the job and hopefully end up with a few survivors.
