if any of you guys have been able to successfully treat hole in the head can you please tell me what you did.
I have a 10 month old Oscar that has it and I cant get rid of it.I have used medicine given by a vet which seemed to work but 2 weeks after I finished using the medicine my oscar started to behave like he was again and he now has knew holes in his head.
I am considering euthanasia as he must be in a lot of discomfort but I first want to do everything that is possible to save him.
ph 6.6
nitrite 0
ammonia 0
nitrate 10
thanks for the help

There are medications for it but if the water conditions have not improved, the problem will just return. They should have very clean tanks because they are very dirty fish. And very good filtration to remove the debris and room to swim as well. Not enough room causes stress.....stress leads to weakened immune systems....weakened immune systems leads to a host of problems.

i had luck, my severum had it bad from the stores poor water conditions. I didnt put in meds, just did 2 50% water changes daily, and in a month it healed perfectly
oscars can have it for their whole lives, its possible. as long as hes not extremely lethargic, dont euthuanise. I know someone who had a 12" oscar with bad HITH that had a fully long healthy life

my nitrites and ammonia levels have always been at o, my nitrate has peaked at slightly above 20.I have since got the nitrate levels down to 10 by doing 3x30% change a week.
I was under the impression that no matter how much water changes I do my nitrates will stay at 10 due to the fact that their is nitrate in tap water hence the reason for only doing 3 lots of 30%, is this not true ?
cheers

a few more questions
do all fish that have hole in the head have internal parasites ?
what are the chances that this disease could spread to my other oscar ?

Diet can also be a contributing factor and many people did see it go away when their diet improved. What are you feeding it?

this oscar went completely of his food when he became sick.To get him to eat I gave him some live foods and now that is all he will eat.I have NLS,Hikari and tetra at home nut he will not touch them.I am afraid that if i starve him he will simply die because he is already a skinny fish.
down here in Australia we don't have as big a range of products as you guys do in the USA .I cant find any vitamins for fish, can I put human vitamins in the tank ?

I've made a DIY gel food with fresh shrimp and things and I took a multiviatmin and crushed in and dropped the powder in with no harm. Somewhere in the food section there is a thread about it. It is rather messy but when I did it my goldfish loved it.

just to confirm the vitamins you crushed were they specially designed for fish or are they just normal vitamins that people can take ?
thanks for the help

took the advice mentioned above and have increased water changes up to 2x30% for the last few days.Nitrate is still 10 but the oscar is so much more active. He's gone from being active 10% of the time to active for 70% of the time.
he is still not eating anything at all.I got some live brine shrimp and he wouldn't touch it.Not interested in live meal worms, crickets and earth worms. He is extremely skinny so I am hoping he starts eating soon
