I read on a catfish forum that plecos like French cut green beans, and when I opened a can for bean salad the other night, I thought I'd try. I rinsed two pieces off, screwed them on the screwcumber and dumped them in the tank.

Immediately the diamond tetras were all over it and the cories came to investigate. I didn't see the plecos, as I'd put the beans in just before lights out, but the next morning there was not a snatch of them left (of the beans, not the plecos). Not even a piece of skin. This never happens with the lettuce, zucchini or cucumber I tried so far. ;o)

Good news!

Always good to know what to give them for treats!

Don't give up on the other veggies, though.. :)

Have you tried fresh green beans?

Nono, I won't give up (I like variety as much as they do :c3: ).

About fresh green beans I'm not sure. I was always told not to eat beans raw, so won't try that, but the next time I cook fresh beans I'll fish one out for them before I put salt on. I'll let you know.

Yeah, I didn't mean RAW, raw.. :)

Blanched in the microwave or boiling water for a bit, first, like with zucchini, etc..

I feed peas and some other canned green veggys to my fish on occasion, they all love the treat. Its a very good xtra food to give as it gives vitamins and digestive benefits they dont get from flakes and the like.

I would not give them canned vegetables. They are factory processed in salt and probably preservatives and possibly even artifical coloring. Get it fresh or frozen.

Thats a good precaution but the salt content would be minimal and if quality canned veg was used there are no preservatives or coloring added. The benefit to using canned would be the precooked quality which makes it more readily consumed by the fish.

Good point. They were organic beans without artificial additives. They do contain a bit of sea salt though, which is why I rinsed them off first to get rid of at least the part that hasn't soaked in. And I don't plan on making this a regular meal for them, more like an occasional treat.

It is a good way to clean out their digestive systems. You should try frozen peas. Just take a small handful in a cup of water and nuke it for about 30 seconds to a minute. After they are done you can just pinch the individual peas to remove their outer shells (easy once blanched). Good once every week or two to aid digestion.

dont worry about removing the shells if you have bottom feeders, they will remove them for you.

Oh, I guess I figured the fish would eat the shell and it would cause some sort of blockage. That certainly makes it easier.

The shell is very digestable ,at least it has proven to be so in my case.My corys and yoyos chew it up .
