Hello...my name is Sonja and I need answers about my pregnant red oscar.
We have an 80 gallon tank with 3 oscars, 1 flowerhorn, 1 lace catfish and 2 tinfoil barbs. They all seem to be very happy together.

Yesterday we realized the red oscar was fat. My biggest question is about treating the oscars for ick while while pregnant and after eggs are laid or hatched. Does anyone have info on this topic?

We never intended on breeding our fish, but I guess they had other ideas! Please help asap as we are anticipating eggs being laid soon.

Thank you!!

Most likely if she was ready to lay eggs she would be paired off with a male in the tank and the two of them would beat the others into sickness or death. If you do not see this behvaior she may have just eaten a lot.

There's lots of cures for Ick on the market but Quick Cure is said to kill ICK in two days. Likely as not, if one fish has it the others will as well and you may have to treat the whole tank.

Fish will bloat on occassion from over feeding. He may need some veggies added to his diet and it would not hurt to let them go a couple days without food if he is bound up. But as reptileguy, unless you have seen a lot of aggression toward the remaining Oscar, likely or not it is not pregnant.

Welcome to AC. i have had good experiences with quick cure, but treat for 10 days instead of 3 or 4

o.k...I am positive that my red oscar is pregnant. Her belly keeps getting bigger by the day. She was eating just fine until a few days ago and then her appetite dropped. As of right now she is not interested in eating at all and we have tempted her with all of her favorites. Also, she continues to sit at the bottome of the tank and only moves in between two small areas. she also tends to lay on her side. Yesterday we bought a tank divider and separated the other fish from her but left the tiger oscar with her. The albino tiger oscar keeps trying to get passed the divider to be with the tiger and red oscars.

if anyone has advice concerning pregnant oscars and what to expect, we would sure appreciate it. should i put the albino tiger back in with the other two? when can we expect eggs to be laid? also, can we treat the ick while the oscar is pregnant or during the time eggs are layed and hatching?

thanks for your input!!!
