The adults are all out and quarreling and flaring at each other, lots of nice colors showing and sure looks like a spawning is in the works. Still have a dozen from their last spawn to get rid of.
These are nice fish, tho. At least they spawn every couple of months and not every 2 weeks. Guess I take everything from their tank tomorrow and go on my egg hunt. :c3:
Anyone thinking of a rather mild cichlid, firemouths would be the ticket. I've had them with everything and they don't bother other fish at all and only do some flaring at each other. No fighting, just puffing up and acting tough.

I'm surprised. My firemouth has been an absolute menace to my parrots. So much so that I have to move him to a different tank.

Other fish, not other cichlids. My parrots and my firemouths fight also altho my parrots did not bother at all with the firemouth fry. It's all in the being raised together, I guess. My parrots and firemouths have to be in different tanks.

Maybe it depends on the color of the other fish...orange/red Parrots make Meekis angry???? Could be....
My Meekis get along with anything and everybody, as long as the others dont fit into a Meeki mouth. Even when they are spawning, they chase the others up to their territory boarder, and thats about it.
I even recommend FMs as a beginners Cichlid, given a big enough tank.

I agree Andrea. Not too large, not too ornery. No lip locking or drawing blood. One pair even adopted the fry from the other pair and were as nice to them as their parents were. Two pair in a 55 gallon work out great leaving space for others species.

I have firemouths and barbs, but the barbs are bigger then the firemouths. From what I have read, they should be ok together. My largest firemouth was trying to "get it on" with my female Kribensis yesterday. May he though her red belly was sexy, lol.

Firemouths pretty much only bother each other and ignore other fish. But once again, raising cichlids together is different than dropping them full grown into a tank together with different outcomes.
