Pleco live for years so I doubt that's the problem. I have no suggestions for you at all, I'm sorry to say. Altho your water parms are perfect, is the water clean and oxygenated?

Sunk in eyes in Plec's is usually a sign of undernourishment...could it be he didn't get enough to eat?

Sounds like it might have been bloat, pleco's and some cichlids develop the condition from improper diet. Their digestive systems aren't geared for high protein food and can become blocked. Feeding them blanched peas usually takes care of the problem, though in this case (if that was the problem with your pleco) it's too late. Common pleco's tend to prefer meatier food as they grow, but should still be fed veggies too.
Sorry to hear you lost an old fishy friend, but on the bright side now you have room for a new one.
