I purchased 2 female and 1 male guppy today. i noticed one female is fatter then the other, and probably is pregnant (females were separate from males at the store). If she is pregnant, is there a way to tell how far along she is so i can prepare a breeding tank. If shes not then i know they will be soon because they were "going at it" with in 10 minutes of adding them to the tank. Here is a video of her [Only Registered Users Can See Links.]

well if the females and males are seperate i dont think she could be pregnant.

I think they are preagnent for about a month and they can hold sperm and become pregnant multiple times even if they only "went at it" once.

As ehjsne says they can hold sperm so even if she came across a male for 3 seconds months ago she can easily be pregnant... they will pretty much be pregnant non stop with a male in the tank...they are baby making machines

I've been watching her and she does look pregnant she has a black spot like i've seen on pictures while the other female does not have the black spot. Would a 5 gallon bare bottom tank be a good fry tank, with a heater, filter and aerator of course? I plan on feeding some of the fry to my other tanks, but also plan on keeping some. and I have a community tank 2 separate the male and females when i don't need/want fry.

Yes. A small, bare bottom tank will be enough. Sometimes it is a bit challenging to feed the babies, but certain plants such as Java moss can hold some infusoria on their leaves (you can also grow your own infusoria) and that will be more than enough food to make the fry grow big and strong!

remember not to leave them in the small tank for too long or else it will stunt their growth. I left mine in a breeder for too long and the males of that line are usually very small now.

thanks for that advice, I set up my 5 gallon hex for the fry and i am keeping a large black mystery snail in it until the fry show up.

We got a 10 gallon instead, i don't really like the hex and the 10 gives more room and they can grow a little more.

Actually guppy fry are quite easy to feed. All you need to do is crush up flakes.

When should i move her to the fry tank, she's looking pretty big and hes gravid (I think thats what its called) is very dark. I don't know how to tell how far along she is. She's also slowed down. I just don't want her to give birth overnight and then eat them all. I may put her in before bed.

You could put her in there now. Or just be lazy like me and have a ton of plants and hiding spots at the bottom of the tank so the fry can hide and avoid predators. And crushing up normal flake food so it's small enough for the fry to eat is my favorite way of feeding them. Oh, and something I always thought was kind of neat is if you look really close at the female's gravid spot, you can see the eyes of her fry! Maybe some people might think that's kind of creepy. Meh. Be careful with the intake of your filter...

Another thing you can give them that's good, take brine shrimp either the cubes or the full bodied freeze dried ones and stick it in a blender or food processor, grind it up till it's almost dust and VIOLA! you have fry food :)

The colors are POPPING OUT on my guppies ever since i've been feeding them shrimp dust since birth. The reds and violets are much richer in color also those flourescent tones some of them have look like they "glow" more.
