I have had him/her for a little over a year. When I got "wolfgang" he was about 2.5" long stayed close to the bottom and liked to hide in the sand. Now it is over 10" long and looks like a log. I found it at a lame petstore which has since gone out of business. It was labeled a "wolf fish" but any searches that I came up with did not look anything like it. I was at the Aquarium in Chicago a couple weeks ago and they had a Wolf Fish and it was a saltwater fish. Not my fish.

I have no idea but this thing is vicious. It's a total ambush hunter and so fast that you hardly see it strike. I just want to know what species this is. Wolf Fish doesn't cut it for me.

Its hard to tel the description is rather vague and the picture doesn't resemble him. The one in the picture is shiny and scaly with totally different eyes. THis is what I mean, its not a wolf fish like that....driving me crazy

hides alot, but sometimew will hang out in the open on the floor or mid level. He doesnt bother the baby convict, jewel, Oscar, kompressicept or Plecos.

He downs tons of goldfish. That is all that I have seen him eat. Oh and he must have eaten our baby pacu because it is gone.

He ambushes and pretends to be a log. He looks upside down at first glance as well. awesome fish.

The mouth doesn't look right. Mine is flat from pretty much the dorsal fin to the end of his mouth.

It looks like some type of Goby to me.

I looked at the sculpins link and the fins are different as well. Mine's dorsal fins are small and dark. his side fins are smaller and he has smaller ones underneath him.

I looked up Gobies and none were the same. close though.

I believe you have an "Hoplias Malabaricus" fresh water wolf fish. They seem to come in quite a few variations. But what you describe is exactly what I have seen when I have seen them in pet stores. They are best kept alone.
Here a few good examples why.

This guy on youtube feeds his mice...lol

Here is one eating Goldfish
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7tFL9eEtDU&NR=1

They are lightning fast which is very surprising for thier size. Imagine if these grew to the size of a crocadile, wow, would be like somthing from Jurasic park...sheesh

Well I hope this info helps and good luck.

The first thing I thought when I saw it was "that fish has the profile of a mudskipper and seems to act like a goby"... Sure enough, as I kept reading, it's a goby!

it is a Hoplias malabaricus, common name Mud Characin, or Wolf fish. I just lost mine, he stuck his head in a scull and got stuck :(
