My puffer is getting older and i think its time to start adding salt. My question is How much salt does she need to have? and What kind of salt should I use?

From what I have read you probably want to bring the specific gravity up to somewhere around 1.008-1.010 to start with. Since brackish is a mix of river and ocean then you should use marine salt to accomplish this.

I use marine salt as ILuvMyGoldBarb suggested. The specific gravity in my GSP tank is about 1.022.
If you're acclimating to brackish conditions and it is the only brackish-type fish in the (currently) freshwater tank, you'll want to increase salinity slowly over a span of about 6-8 weeks or more to allow for a gradual change over of your beneficial bacteria colony, depending on how high your target salinity is. I believe I acclimated mine to saltwater in about two months (increasing salinity about +.002SG per week).
If there are non-brackish tank mates, you will have to relocate them before you start increasing the salt level.

I just want to point out for mollielover that 1.022 is actually higher than brackish conditions, that is actually full marine conditions . It is something you can do if you so choose but it isn't necessary. The 1.010 I suggested is only mildly brackish so if you are wanting to maintain brackish condiditons you can really hit anything in between a specific gravity of 1.010 and 1.020. If I were you I would eventually bring it up to the 1.015 level.

Ok thanks alot will start. and i have baloon mollies in with him now but i plan to move them as the gsp gets bigger so they dont get hurt. Should i move them before I change to brackish or will they be ok?

if you want to keep the mollies as brackish after, it will be alright. if you want the mollies in FW after, dont do it, it would be too stressful to go from FW to BW and back to FW
