I have a fully cycled 30 gal. with 1 dwarf frog, 1 dwarf gourami, and 1 betta. I just bought 6 fancy guppys, 3 male and 3 female, one female had babies this morning. I have 20 fry in a breeder net to keep them safe. I was wondering how many guppys total would be ok in this tank. I do weekly water changes of 35-40 percent. After I reach the max number of adult fish, I plan to let the fry remain in the open water and become a snack for the others, hopefully this will keep population in check.
Thanks for any advice.

does the betta and gourami work togetther??? male betta and gourami??
guppies need to have at least 1m,2 f ratio, preferably more!!! males harass to death. i would return 2 males, and get 2 more females. amles are prettier, but you need lots more females.
probably a b8nch of fry will survive, hate to break it, so if you are planning to keep some, add no more.
good luck!

this setup ( please note that your case may be different, corresct me if i am wrong) may have these provblems
1) betta and gourami fight to the death
2)male guppies harass the feamles to death.
3) you will have a zillion fry

i agree big time, guppies will never stop producing fry no matter what. even if you kept two or three every time, your tank would fill up quick. you should either replace some fish or get another tank.
just my two cents worth =)

Thanks for the quick responses.
I have read other posts and sites that say the betta/gourami mix works depending on the personality of the individual fish. Mine have been together for a couple of months now and don't chase or anything. They kinda keep to separate areas of the tank, but do get close at feeding time and I have never had any problems.
If you happen to set up some sort of cichlid tank, guppy fry make excellent feeder fish. Or you could maybe sell them to a LFS. Guppies are a lot of fun to breed so if you have the time and energy, don't let the possibility of overpopulation get to you.

you could do fine with 10-25 guppies but they will get old and overpopulate ur tank in no time. And I reccomend a ratio of 1 male:3 female.

I'd wait and see how many guppy fry the betta and gourami take out. They won't get them all, but should be able to keep their numbers down somewhat.

I have a goldfish tank also with 4 fancy goldfish. I could always put some of the fry in their tank as a live treat, right? I know I can't keep all the fry, but between the betta and gourami in the guppy tank and the goldfish, I should be able to keep the population down.

sounds like the betta gourami worked, lucky you! well, yes, and the frog takes them out big time, you will have to see.
how big is the GF tank? i really want a GF tank, but i dont have the money and space for an 80 gal, again, lucky you!

My GF tank is a 30 gal. I feed them sinking pellets, and not alot of them, and fresh veggies. I also do 50% weekly water changes. I know 4 goldfish in 30 gal is alot, but I think the fresh veggies and large WC enable it to work out.
If you want Goldfish, the general rule is 20 gal for the first fish and 10 gal for each additional fish. You could easily get away with less than 80 gal, you just couldn't have as many fish.

1. goldfish are mainly vegetarians and I dont think they will eat the guppies
2. GF are some of the messiest fish out their. Almost as bad as plecos I would reccomend nothing less than a 55 with them becuase they can also get big.

Personaly I strongly advise against that becuase even the smallest of the species can reach over 6" and have some of the biggest bioload of fish. They also require 30 sq in of surface are per fish. So if you do go ahead with that grace please make sure you get a fantail and only one.

All goldfish are the same species.

Lol I dont remember my biology terms I was lucky to pass that class. But their are diferent kinds of goldfish. Some reach over a foot and get a pretty decent size round wise. My sister has one and its big and would not fit in a 20g.
