Random pics and info of some of my malawi's...

Despite their superficial differences the two mbuna's below (yellow top mbamba & yellow lab) are members of the same genus. During their social interactions (particularly during confrontations between rival males) no distinction was made between the two species themselves. Male mbamba's often joined (or were drawn into) male yellow lab frays.

For about a year one of my malawi eye biters (a predatory cichlid) would stalk the smallest fish in the tank, a 3" malawi blue dolphin, as if contemplating whether or not it should attempt to eat it or not, even thought the latter was obviously too big to swallow. The eye biter eventually ceased doing that once the c. moorii exceeded 3.5".

The 'compressed' physique of the malawi eye biter significantly reduces their 'cross-sections' and minimizes the chance of prey detecting them, especially when stalking from above and behind):
