what kind of pleco will stay relatively small?

define small. Bristle noses get 6-8"

Lots of them will. However, if you are looking for an algae eater for your 29gal, I would suggest a group of about 4 Otos, they are great little algae eaters. They stay nice and small.

What type of algae do you have? Otos have soft mouths so they won't eat all types of algae.

Clown pleco's stay quite small, though they do need driftwood to gnaw on, pitbull pleco's are good for algae control. I recently got 6 Colombian zebra pleco's that max out under 3". They have cleaned up a heavily overgrown 38 in 2 days, but aren't strictly algae-eating fish like BN's.
