So you all saw my thread on me getting my 30g back up and running after about 6months of not using it. I put some freshly cut plants in there and within about 4 days they just melted to nothing.

I was thinking maybe i added a little bit too many nutrients...but thats just because i don't know what else could cause them to melt that fast.

I didn't put any chlorine eliminator which might have also done it...

so what are some causes for melting plants?

Here is the link to me setting it up.

Scroll down a bit to see the picture of what things i put in it.

Can't help with a technical answer. Just wanted to say sorry to hear your news. You were excited about getting that tank up and running. What a bummer.

Yup, the chlorine and chloramine would do it. The chlorine would only have had an effect for 24 hours but the chloramine would have been an ongoing effect. Even with no fish in there you still need to get rid of the chrloramine.

I did a water change thinking it might have been too many nutrients and added some Zip drops like i should have done the first time.

My anubis and at least 2 of the floating plants i added look like they might make it(thick leaves) the floating plants lost their roots but since then have already put out new ones.

I've got some cutting to do in my big tank anyway so i'll just add some more as long as you think it was probably the chlorine in the tap.

I've had the same problem with a few varities of plants. The blyxa, which happens to be a favorite of mine, melted twice. Others melted right at the planting line before they ever had a chance to get roots.

I'm sorry that you had this problem.... but yeah, I think it was the chlorine/chloramine. Many oxidants -including several metal ions- can cause this to happen. Sorry about that. What's the plan now?

You need I think give the tank a chance to get use to the plants before adding fertilizer.

What kind of gravel?

The plants where cuttings from my other tank so they should have been okay. I added declorinator and some new cuttings and so far so good.

It must have just been a bad case of too much chlorine. And on that note my ZIP drops that i usually use are almost out. What do you guys recommend for a declorinator?
