Advice regarding my Monodactylus Argenteus please .

I purchased 4 small ones - bit bigger than a 50 pence piece - and the store INSISTED that they should be kept in FRESHWATER not BRACKISH .

After checking for hours on the internet - everywhere else recommends adding a little aquarium / marine salt to keep them happy.

If I persist with freshwater will they simply die a slow death or what ??

Yes, you need salt. As they mature, they will become fully Saltwater fish, and will need to be kept in a SW tank.

PLus they will get huge. Really big. Over 8 inches. So you will need a really big tank to keep a school.
