My tank is a 70l juwel rekord. it has been set up for 3 weeks now, allowing the plants to establish.I have an Internal filter system, with 4 sponges.eg. blue sponge at bottom.
green sponge.
black sponge.
at top white sponge.
according to what i have read the black/green sponges need to be changed every 6 weeks with new ones. (quite expensive)
white sponge every week, when i change 25% of water. is this correct? also can i buy these sponges in BULK. TANK 70x41x31:thumb:
Cheers.

If you can't get to these sponges to just rinse them out, I would think of getting another type of sponge filter that can be. Sponge filters can last a long time just by an occassional rinsing.
I recently bought some type of internal filter for my fry tank and the filters are in a plastic holder and the whole thing needs replacing. That one I will toss out for that reason. I can buy the other one for what the replacements cost for this one.

The sponges don't need to be replaced until they are practically falling apart. The sponges become inhabited by heaps of good bacteria which neutralise toxins produced by the fish. If you replace them that often, you will also get rid of all the good bacteria, and then toxins will build up in your water, making your fish sick or possibly killing it.
The white one you can replace whenever it's needed, once a week seems a bit excessive to me. I usually replace mine about once every 2 or 3 months, while I have yet to change the other sponges, and I've had the tanks for 6 months.

Hi lady.
Thanks for your reply! The internal filter in my Aquarium holds these sponges in a plastic cage, the actual size of these sponges are 10cm square, what other sponges are available, and where can i purchase them??
thanks.

They look like this and attach to an air pump. All you need to do is rinse out the sponge every couple of months in tank water. Cheap!
The best part is you're not losing your good bacteria by starting out with a new one each time.

As you have a Juwel tank, my guess is that you are in the UK or in Europe. I also have the same tank set-up for a plant/hospital tank with the internal filter. I would alternate rinsing sponges gently in used (after a water change for example) aquarium water to get most of the gunk out--don't rinse all sponges out at once. Do one set of sponges one month, and the other set the other month. You only need replace the sponges, as mentioned, when they are falling apart or about to fall apart. The directions that come with the tank/filter are simply an encouragement to buy more product faster than needed.
Most LFS's that sell Jewel tanks also sell all of the filter material. Alternatively, if you have access to a larger LFS or pet store chain, you might see if you can buy similar material as to size and density of of the blue block sponges and cut them to size, and the same for the white filter floss. Let me know if that helps or if you have more questions. You are certainly free to pm me as well.
