Sorry, just a question... Do you think that the new version of google earth is sort of an invasion of privacy. Whats the pros and cons?

As for me, I really don't like it. It gives online predetors and such a new way to find out where someone lives. How you ask, if I was talking to someone and said Oh I live in I dunno chicago, they can type it in and it will go to chicago, then as a feature, it has house finder, you type in the color of the house the geography around it and such, and it will find the house for you.

As for pros, its kind of cool to see all the way across the world, so you could explore places without going there.

Cons, the predetor thing, and the point that strangers could look at your house is kind of scary and such.

Dunno, sorry if its a usless thread...

I think it's neat, but at the same time unsettling. It's so weird to be sitting there and looking at your house and realizing that anyone in the world can do the exact same thing.

Google earth just made it 10X as bad to mention where you live. I do admit that it is a really fun experience, getting to explore the world from above. Go to new york city and see the 3 dimensional city.

I think I might be behind the times in this department. But what's new about Google earth that's causing concern?

It has many new features that lets you view where other people live, even by just typing in a description of surrounding areas. So if a child were to say, oh I go to flame elementary, they would type in flame elemntory and it would take them to it, then they could as, do you walk there, if she said yes then he would know its close by, then he could ask, do you live in a big house, I wish I did, and she would say yes or no and that would give him the section of the city, and finally, he could ask what does your house look like since its so big, she would tell him, he would type it into the description box, then two days later, kidnap and kill the girl. Easy as pie.... Sad really

well, I think that also deals with teaching your kids better. Where I live, people don't take the time to teach their kids right from wrong.

It's feasible but I'm not sure that something like that has me too worried. There are alotta evils on the net that's for sure. But I worry more for the ones that are right down the street or not far up the road. Besides, there are other ways of finding people if you know what you're doing. And Google earth still leaves some things more vague even with what you've said. I'm not dismissing your opinion, so please don't take this the wrong way.

Strangers see my house every day..

And in any city there will be a number of houses with the same colour and a detached garage or any other characteristics. And who goes around describing their house in detail to strangers anyway? If someone asked me about my house I would prolly give them the colour, but there's nothing else about our house that's worth mentioning... Except maybe how it is on the inside, but I doubt Google Earth can find houses based on interior.

It would only work in Usa anyway, and only in larger cities. I doubt they would put effort into mapping every single house in every little village. And in the larger cities it's not a problem because there would be so many houses that fit the criteria.

If a predator wants to find someone to attack/rape/kill, I hightly doubt they would use Google Earth to do it. If you talk to someone who's a predator and they decide to do you in, they'd most likely just follow you home or get your details off friends, pretending to be interested in a date or something.Just because someone can see your house in some program doesn't mean they'll pick a random house on there and go 'hey, I think I'll break into that house tonight'. They do their research, they don't just pick random houses they see as they walk along the street, and they wouldn't pick some random house on Google Earth.

^^ I agree.

So if a child were to say, oh I go to flame elementary, they would type in flame elemntory

They could find it at Google Maps or Earth, but they can also just use any internet search engine to find where "Flame Elementary" is located. They can stake out the paths to the school and stalk a child. Anyone can do that even without internet chatting. The mistake was made when the school was named.

I was just seeing if it worked. No reason to single me out. Everyone has there own opinion. I think it does make it easier. You don't know what kind of houses I live by. I could be the only one like I described. Sorry you got so huffy about it.

Totally cool with it....as said above, strangers walk/drive by my house everyday. You run the risk of invasion, strangers, robbers, etc every single day without google earth and people really aren't doing anything that they can't point down on any map and say "I want to go check out this neighborhood"....they look at your house online just like they can do driving by real life, its really no different. I've got plenty of awareness and protection for myself, I'm not worried about it too much.
