I have the whole betta setup goin, and i want to breed my female, but i dont know if shes too old. i got her when she was about an inch long from a pet store, and have had her about 4 months. how old do you think she is? i dont want to endanger her by trying when she is too old.

She's prolly too old and you have no idea what combination of genes she has anyway. If you wanna breed them I'd suggest getting bettas from a breeder, that way you know exactly how old it is and what genes it has and what to expect from the offspring.

Have you tried everything to "get her in the mood" and seen them all fail?

Wait... If she was only an inch long and you have had her for only 4 months than I seriously doubt the fish is too old. Dont these fish live roughly 4-5 years?

Yes, but they are usually bred before they are 1 year old, after that they are considered too old by professional breeders.

Oh, learn something new...

Breeding bettas would be fun but I really couldnt keep them all nor could I bare to send them to sit in little cups at my LFS.

It is possible to breed betta at even 1+ years of age. Actually the more mature they are, the better parents they will be, ie; younger males tend to beat up the female during spawning and become an anxious egg eater. However, the younger they are the more vitality and energy they have, hence a more successful batch. IMO the best age to breed bettas is 6-9months of age.

When you bought ur female at about 1 inch, im guesstimating that she is about 2-3 months old, then u had her for about 4 month which makes her about 6-7 months old currently. That is a fine age for them to breed. :thumb:

And yes betta live around 3-4+ years.

I thought you were supposed to breed your fish when they were around an inch long? so I dont think shed be too old.
