they prefer being alone, and even though your fish are small in the 55g, you have fish that get huge (clown loaches and black ghost knife)

they can be in single or more, i have personally had good luck with multiples.
for best results, if you are going for more than one, get 1m, 2f. however, 2 males worked for many people.
your fish must be peaceful, cause gouramis are and some move very slow.
one of my favorite fish, so beautiful.

I hope that having two males together works out for you. We're afraid to put another male in with ours, so if we get anymore, it will be a couple of females. Let us know how it goes!

Cool . . . ya know, despite petsmart labeling all their dwarf gouramis as males, I really think they do have females in their tanks from time to time. I see some very silver dwarf gouramis in there with few markings and the rounded dorsal fin like one would expect with a female.

yes, petsmart is horrible at sexing. once, they gave me the wrong gender platy, and another time, i had to sex them myself!
two males worked out for me.... they seem to scrabble a bit but dont hurt each other. in a 55 they should have plenty of room to establish territory.
