Please help me ID my new cichlid. i found him(yes it is a he, I examined his vent) in a petco with some electric blue johaniis. He was sold to me as an electric yellow(obviously not true). at first i thought he was a Copadichromis borleyi but his body shape is way off. he may not even be a malawi but i think he's a mbuna. help me guys.
Thanx,

Looks like a juvie Auloncara (peacock, not mbuna) to me. Can't say which species until it develops full coloration though.

Its definitely a peacock. It looks almost identical to my female eureka reds but has more coloring in the tail and the top fin. If its a male it will soon be fully colored and you will know what kind of peacock it is.

he may not even be a malawi but i think he's a mbuna.
So, you're suggesting it may be a Tanganykian mbuna? Or possibly an immigrant from Peru?
It is safe to say that not all Malawi's are mbuna, yet all mbuna are Malawi's.

nigga im sayin idk what he is for all i know he is from peru but what my best guess is is that he's a mbuna i just went to watch my fish a little and he isn't doin so well i don't think he gone live till tommorrow morning:scry: so i'll probably end up takin him back to PETCO and getting a male electric yellow:thumb: to go with my 2 females:l9:

It's not generally a good idea to mix other types with mbuna (for future reference) due to differences in diet and temprament.

I've lost count of the number of fish I've bought w/out knowing what they were or required. That was before the internet, when trying to ID an unfamiliar fish from books (often w/out a picture of the exact species) was the only hope. Now I research any fish before I buy it, and mainly deal with online sellers because the local selection is really limited. Shoot, there isn't even a Petco or similar outfit less than an 70 miles from here, much less the variety you have available in FL.
Save yourself the hassle and expense of learning from mistakes (like I did) and do your research first. Then you'll be able to pick out fish w/out having to trust someone who has little or no idea of what they're selling.

Racism is a quick trip to the banned list. I clearly understand your attempt at humor but this is not the place for it. While I am not a moderator I think its safe to say I speak for them in this instance. Good luck with your fish keeping future.
