A few weeks ago I got like 10 free fish from a family that moved 1/2 way across the country. They had a really nice 50G corner tank and two kids. I think the kids would be very happy to have their fish back and I have just emailed the mom, offering them back.

Is there an instruction anywhere on how best to do this and what it might cost?

I think the best way would be to use them foam packing crates and heat pacs, you could go see if your local lfs has some or see what thay use, i cant tell you what it would cost as im in the uk sorry

Maybe it would be easier to order them some new fish online to get them started? Not sure if the kids would care to have the same fish or new ones... Just thinking outside the box

I really wouldn't do it.It would be very expensive as it would have to be shipped the fastest way possible,it would be heavy ,leading to more expense,it would be potentially heartbreaking for the kids to open up a box with there former fish dead and bloated in baggies.Find a pet store close to them and get them a gift certificate.BTW you are probably looking at a 75-100 dollar shipping fee.

smaug,
Sorry, no.
FedEx Overnight is 40 bucks, not 75 to 100 dollars, and there are breather bags to ship in, so no bloated dead fish in baggies. All my fish come FedEx Overnight, and in the 15 years I've been buying fish online both wholesale and retail, no DOAs, and I've shipped fish world wide Overnight (which is 75 to 100 dollars) with the same results.
Have to speak from experience, not supposition, my friend.

cool packs in summer/heat packs in winter

And don't let me send them or I will kill them all.

FedEx overnight, sweety, FedEx. Pack the fish in breather bags and it's a no brainer. If I can do it you certainly can.

Actually, here is a quote page from UPS giving exactyl how much it would cost to ship halfway across the country [from me anyway].This "supposes" a 25 lb package because I dont know how big the bags Rich would have to use.My 75-100 was a bit off Dave,{on the cheap side I think}.Anyway,it WOULD be very expensive.

OR pack them in breather bags in a styro insulated flat rate priority mail box. Cost you only like 9 dollars to ship and a few bucks for the packing materials.
