Will a dwarf gourami eat crystal red shrimp? I really like the shrimp and my little sister wants a gourami for the 12 gallon. If it will eat them, what's another good solitary fish that won't eat them? Originating from SE asia would be preferable. I can't think of any at the the moment!

Dwarf gourami will eat small shrimps like crystal shrimps. I would not recommend them especially with the crystal shrimps, considering their expensive price tag.
Crystal shrimps will be much better of alone. Some fish may not eat them but may bully the shrimps. Maybe others can give better advice.

i have found that when it comes to shrimp.... if the fish can get it in its mouth there is a chance they will it it. i keep some dwarf gouramis, not with shrimp, but the way they seem really curious i would have to almost promise you that the shrip would be eaten.

I say the same thing. Though my dwarf gouramis don't eat my smaller fish, they love to investigate my dwarf frog and snail. Never have they hurt them but I bet they are much tougher than your little shrimps.

Umm, I didn't really mean can I use crystal shrimp as a food item lol.
Well it turns out my LFS can only get cherry shrimp, but I guess it's all the same. What about a sparkling, croaking or pygmy gourami? Or can they fit a shrimp in their mouth too?

Most fish will have a go at shrimp. Even if they don't eat them they are likely to rip their legs off.

Then how come (some) people have cherrys in their aquariums? (not trying to sound sarcastic. I am just asking)

^ yup.. shrimps are best to be kept in a species tank in a 12 gallon. Some suitable tank mates are otto's, others with lower chance of success includes; rasboras, corydoras, tetras, endlers, guppies, danios, etc (small schooling fish under 2inch). Just remember to keep your tank heavily planted (with heaps of java moss) and decored.
Gourami is unfortunately a "no" with shrimps. Even though he pgymys are pretty small, they will torture them and eat them up slowly (from previous experience).

Provided you start off with a lot of shrimp and have heaps of hiding places, they may be able to maintain a small population. I would agree that ottos and other catfish such as the bristlenose catfish prolly wouldn't touch the shrimp.

I have always liked endlers, but too bad they are a live bearer. I guess I will try and get a school of rasboras. But not harlequin or lambchop (espei). I wanted spotted (pygmy) but my LFS can't find them. What are some more interesting rasboras?

What about 6 threadfin rainbowfish? Will they eat the shrimp?

threadfins are a very small fish, and being a mostly top-dwelling fish your shrimps will be safe from harassments provided alot of cover is given.
