We've got a 5 gallon with a male Betta imbellis and a few babies and there are some, minor, algae problems. It's heavily planted with java fern, hygrophila and pennywort.

We' tried cherry and ghost shrimp, and the betta really liked them ... for lunch ... and we don't really want anything as large as an amano. We also don't want to take the chance with otos, he's aggressively chased other fish in the tank and (being honest) we don't have the greatest track record with otos.

So would neritas or apple snails be effective algae control? Would it be a problem with the betta?

Thanks for any info.

They should be fine.

neither will do much for your algae.

Apple snails love plants of the species hygrophila, so it's just as likely to eat them as your algae. Worth a try tho, snails are pretty good with algae as long as they choose to eat algae over fish food and plants.
