Thanks for the info i'm planning on getting a new tank between 30 -45 gallons and was looking at some of the bio-wheel filters. Question. Does the Bio-wheel ever to be replaced and if it does wouldn't you lose all the good bacteria? Right now I have a Cascade 200 with sponge, floss and carbon cartridges and i'm told to replace one at a time. so the good bacteria is always present.

They also should not even need cleaning. They are made (as any good filter layout is) so that the cleanest water possible is going across the biological media. This way there is no buildup that cuts off oxygen to the nitrifying bacteria. Basically, put it on and forget it (at least the biowheel part of the filter).
