Hi all! Does anyone know if crushed lava could be used as a substrate? I am wanting to use some sand and lava. I need to use some sand for my polyterus. But I was thinking maybe for the areas where I put my rock caves if I could build it up a little with crushed lava. Would appreciate any input or ideas for some other type that would make a higher level as well as add color. I don't have my fish yet but Tuesday I will be stocking mixed African Cichlid.

If it is aesthetically pleasing to you...why not? I would leave some sandier areas...but that is just me

Crushed coral and lava rock is generally to jagged for mbuna.. most of them will dig in it and from what I have heard on cichlid forums... their mouths could develop sores which can get infected.

I wouldn't do it. My guys dive, mouth wide open into the sand digging for food all the time...I think the jagged edges would tear them up pretty quick.

PLus it would be hard to get the lava rock small enough to make it easy to vaccum. Sand would be the best choice.
