One of my baby firemouths dove right out of the tank and hit the floor when I was feeding this morning! Couldn't believe they could jump that high at 7 weeks.

Only other time that happened is when a Silver Dollar jumped up, hit me smack in the mouth and fell back into the tank.

You must feed them some good food for them to jump out like that :c10: is it ok?

He sure did survive. I just picked him up and tossed him back in and away he went.

I have had a couple of my cichlids jump at my hand to get at the food I was putting in!!!

Similarly, I had a cichlid jump out the tank and fly past my face as I lifted the lid to feed. I was worried because it was more than a 5ft drop to the tile floor. I quickly placed it back in the tank and it commenced to vigorously eating as if nothing happened.

Same thing happens when I feed SA or SEA hatchet fish the wingless mutation of fruit flies. I have to toss the flies in and slam the cover glass quick as I can. You can always hear the hatchet fish bouncing off the glass for a minute or so after feeding.

I got quick about closing the cover glass after a whole flotilla of marbled hatchet fish sailed right out of their tank during a feeding some years ago.

I am picturing these rainbows doing that before long. They certainly are INTENSE at feeding time, too.

Could you add a slidding inner lid to stop them jumping out?

They won't be around here long enough. Those are my fry that are going bye bye.

That's cool, and glad he's OK.

I hope my bass doesn't jump out and hit me......he's big enough to knock me out :)

LOL They do get excited, don't they? A huge tank of bala sharks would be another challenge.
