Hi,
I am new to this hobby and still do not know a lot, but that is why I joined aquatic community. My husband has several aquariums but I do not have any. He said that he was going to help me build one and suggests that I start with an African cichilid tank. What kinds of tanks did you all start with?

Welcome to AC. Cichlids can be a little tricky sometimes, but if you read up on everything and do it with your husband you should be fine. I have a cichlid tank myself (with a few gouramis mixed in)

I started with a 10g knowing I had a larger tank coming....my daughter bought a 5 gal for xmas and I caught the bug after getting hers up and running!
African cichlids are beautiful...hubby has a 75 full of them. There are a couple of members here who have loads of experience with cichlids so I am sure you will get lots of good tips!

Hi there and welcome Jman23. I started with a little cold water tank many years ago with a shubunkin, commets and mini koi. As soon as I saved up enough money I started a tropical tank with Angels, bronze corys, neons and a synodontis nigriventis (I tried other fish like gouramis, hatchet fish, rasboras, mollys and platys but they didn't last as long as the others).
Since then I have always kept a soft water amazonian themed tank with angels and corys being my core fish. Not too adventurous I guess but I've really come to love those species and can't imagine having a tank without them! As for your tank, I'm sure African Cichlids will be fine, especially since your husband is experienced and will be helping you. Browse around the site, you'll also find tons of good info, like Kimmers said, as we do have some very knowledgable cichlid keepers onboard.
My only suggestion is, before you decide, check out all the fish you are interested in. Although your husband suggested African Cichlids, you might find something else more interesting and suitable for you.

Welcome jman23! I started with a small 5 gal with a gold fish. The cool thing is that the gold fish id still alive and well. :)
