My wife jsut walked in the door with some cory cats from a local Pet Supplies PLus. Two of them have fin rot pretty bad.

I don't have a quarantine tank.

What should I do? Part of me wants to try to give them a better life, and save t hem (fin rot is pretty correctable, isn't it). But I also have other fish in the tank I 'm responsible for.

How contagious would the fin rot be to a healthy non-stressed fish?

I'd take them back. Why start out with fish with problems.

I had about 8 corys at one time, three of them developed fin rot, treated it with melafix/pimafix, no problem. I didn't know fin rot was contagious, none of my other fish ever caught it. Still without a quarentine tank you may not want to risk it.

Take them back and talk to the manager. This is the kind of stuff that should not be happening.

Well, I kept them. The 2 fish that had fin issues,....I can't identify them. The LFS said they were a cory cat...and they were listed at $15, but the lady sold them to my wife for the price of the other cories.

Can anyone ID these for me? Here are some pics.

They don't seem to be corydoras. Do you see the two rows on scales on them like on the cories? Can't tell from the pictures, but they don't seem to have any. Eye doesn't seem very cory-like either.

looks like some sick syndontis cats, with clean water the fin rot should heal

It's a young Synodontis aterrimus.

Thanks a ton for the ID. SO these get about 5-inches long then? One of them was really emaciated, it looked like its skin was vacu-sealed to its body. That condition seems to have passed, both are actively feeding. One seems to prefer the sand substrate side of the tank, the other seems to prefer the gravel side.

There is a lot of stores that we walk in and 50% of their tanks is then contaminated with fin rot. We get so upset when you see the poor fishes suffering......there should be a law to crack down on the petshop owners that have more than a certain percentage of fish with diseases.

The Synodontis Cats that I "rescued" are doing well, growing like crazy. I'm getting better with the camera. IN case anyone was interested here's some pics:

Buenos Aries tetra that I took along with a 20g high tank off of freecycle (and the tip of the tail of one of the synodontis cats)

Syno 1: He is the bigger one, a real fatty.

Syno 2: Wish I could get some good shots with their fins displayed fully.
