After finding a heck of a deal on craigslists for a complete 55 gallon tank and stand for under $50, I just had to get it as I wanted to have a tank with a few semi-aggressive fish.

Well part of this deal, it came with fish. He had a couple platties, with some type of tetra fish, a couple Bichirs and a pleco.

I wasn't planning to keep the bichirs, but after putting one through hell, and now they're growing on me, I am now looking for tank mates after this tank finishes cycling.

I do realize that in a year or 2, I'll be looking at a bigger tank for these guys, but for now, I just want to get a couple or more colorful fish. I've been feeding them shrimp flakes and blood worms (they love them) in separate bowls on each side of the tank so they get their fare share of food.

I'm open to any kind of thoughts as I'm new to this game and all my previous research went out the door when i decided to keep the bichirs.

What kind of fish would be compatible tank mates? Like I said earlier, I want some color, but also considering how fast I'm going to need that bigger tank. When I can get my camera going, will post a picture of the current set up.

Wait, a couple of bichirs.. Some species range from 12" to a couple of feet.. and i dont those smaller fish will make it in that tank with the bichirs in with them.. So i think that would be a bad combination to begin with since bichirs are predatory. Same goes for the Pleco. if its a common "run of the mill" pleco then that would require a big tank as well. Id say youre pretty well stocked at the moment.. Need to know what type of species of bichirs you have and the pleco you have. Id think you need a several hundred gallon tank to keep them all in, the 2 bichirs and pleco, maybe more if its a large species of bichir.
