Depends on what it's made out of. The background in my tank is basically foam cut to look like rock. I didn't want to use silicone either, so here's what I did.....

I stuck the background in my tank on by using some very skinny clear plastic wire and suction cups (like the kind that you see on garfield toys in car windows)...I got both at home depot. I also used a large, sturdy needle (for the line) and a thimble.

first, I removed the metal hooks that came on the suction cups. Then I threaded the needle with the plastic line and sewed it to the fat part of the suction cups. I then attached them to the back on the background by threading the line through the the foam. I tried to choose places in the background where the texture would obscure the exposed plastic line- but I have to say, even in the spots where it is visible, I really don't notice it unless my face is right up on the glass and I look for it.

The suction cups have worked very nicely for months and should I ever need to remove the backround, the tank will be just as it was before.

I hope this is helpful.

wont velcro cause similar issues with removal as silicone?

Hmm, smart idea with the thread and suction cups Whitney, maybe you should post this in the DIY thread too so people looking for this kind of info wont miss it!
