Hey,
I got some 3-4 inch jack dempseys and was just wondering what sex they were and how you can tell. Here are the pics

First one is a male, due to the sparkles on his gill plate and red rim on the dorsal. Second is a female, as she has far fewer sparkles than the male. Looks like the bottom fish is a male as well, though the photo is a bit dark to be sure.

My thoughts are the same as Dave's
Male - Female - Male

as i have been dealing with jack dempseys for a long while now, and have breed them, the only true way to sex them is by venting them, but as a general threory the less blue spangles on the jaw means male and the more blue is female. i beleive the prior posts have it backwards. :thumb:

Venting them is the best and most accurate way to sex them, but as stated a few times...the males typically have more blue than the females. As for the red stripe at the tip of the dorsal...both sexes have that.

I think you have two males. the bottom one looks a little faded, but i think it is also a male.

in my honest opinion i really feel u all have it backwards, im not tryin to be a smart a** or be a butt head, but i know my jack's and i am 110% sure that males have a pale gill plate like mine in the photos above and the females have all the blue. trust me on this one guys!:thumb:

I think these two have too much blue through their bodies to be female. As they grow, their mature colors and patterns will change.

Here is my female (who has laid eggs). She hardly has any blue on her body. I think the two in question have too much blue present on their bodies to be females.
