Ive had him for a bit over a week, hes doing very nice...eating like a pig. Cant wait to see him mature into one of the most colorful americans. Anyone else keep Salvini?

It's an interesting fish. I'd like to get one or maybe a pair as tankmates for my Jack Dempsey but from what I've read that won't turn out so pretty in my 40g tank. What size are you keeping that one in?

i have a sal.. that ive kept for about 4 months now.. they are a riot and are very territorial, seems to be more with fish of its own size and shape. i have a red terror that is my sal's size and they have their fits. but all in all a great fish to have and they are beautiful!!

Thanks everyone :) Im keeping him alone, well I added 3 rosie barbs as dithers, in a 25G tank. I expect he could live here permantly or I may upgrade him later depending.

He'll get about 7 inches and will need something larger. I think the sal is a neat cichlid tho.

Indeed, my tank isnt a typical size I had a friend that works at a glass shop make it for me so its really not a bad foot print(30*15) for a max 7" cichlid IMO. He probably will get upgraded to something in the 50+G range tho.

I saw a really awesome adult male at a pet shop, around 20+ years ago. It was fully grown and looked larger than 7", but that may simply be the fuzziness of long-term memory. He had to have been in breeding dress because the colors were eye-popping red on yellow, with the black markings for contrast. He was in a huge tank, which I suspect may have contributed to his size and overall excellent condition. Every time I see a juvie in the lfs I remember that one. Not many fish make such an impression...

Awesome :) Id really like for mine to exceede 7", largest ive seen in person has been about 4" tho. Oh I agree, they are exceptionally beautiful fish, id say one of the best looking in the hobby.
