hello everyone,

i have a 30 gallon tropical fresh water fish tank. i have 4 fish in there (one cory cat fish, one skirt tailed tetra, and 2 red eyed tetras) just yesterday i thought they were fine, but when i got home tonight...i noticed that one of my red eyed tetras was pale in color, has no energy, and his scales are poking out. i have done research on it and everyone is saying it's "dropsy" but he is not bloated and all the water conditions are perfectly fine. is this just the first stages of this "dropsy" disease or is it something else? from the way he's acting i don't think he'll make it through the night. he keeps rolling on his side, but when he does he straightens himself out.

Yup. Sounds like dropsy for sure. Afraid recovering from this is unlikely. Sorry.

i was just wondering since he wasn't bloated...but should i treat the rest of my tank? and if so...with what? my water levels are all perfectly fine, there has been no change in temperature, and i have had these fish for about 2 years now with no problems.

Separate the fish from the whole tank. Do not treat the rest of them, unless they start showing symptoms.

I just had a Flame Tetra die from dropsy over the weekend. Unfortunately he was infected when got him from the store. They told us he was just full from overfeeding due to a freezer in the store going out. However, it was quickly obvious that something wasn't right and it got worse.
We tried to treat him, but it was far too late. Luckily it doesn't seem to have spread to any other fish. I believe I read that dropsy is not all that contagious.
